And it is difficult to argue that the Department, notably in the person of activist Secretary Ray LaHood, is not in there swinging for us passengers. He has done a lot of good, but I would like to highlight a few areas where these "protections" are poor.
For new travel and ideas, see the blog Rick Seaney of farecompare.com.
Examine five areas - tarmac delays; bumping of compensation; pricing transparency. hold 24 hours for tickets; and, most importantly, new reimbursements of expenses baggage, which accords much attention - to see where passengers still get at least a little fined.
1 Reimbursements of expenses of bag may be too little, too late
This sounds good: airlines are required to repay your baggage fees if they lose your bag. Some airlines already do that if you put in a request, but it is important to note that "delayed bag of a man is baggage of another man". In other words, how long should bag disappear before it is considered to be "lost"? Do not say the rules. You say: is your bag went as good as if it has been AWOL for a day, a week, a month?
Something else you should know: compensation of the airline for the content of your missing bag remains unchanged, but don't expect to receive if you had an iPad or jewelry or important documents; even cash in the bag most airlines only cover everything. Indeed, you are violating the rules of some airlines, like American Airlines, if you pack all these objects of value in a checked bag.
Reminder: Keep all valuables on your person, never in a bag (don't forget, when the bin space is a premium, even your carry-on baggage may be checked).
