Construction of a new cable spanning the River Thames in London car will get underway this summer, the Mayor of London, Boris Johnson announced.
The new Highway 1. 1-kilometer (0.68 miles) will link the peninsula of Greenwich next to the O2 Arena with the Royal Docks on the north shore of the River Thames and costs £ 40 million ($65 million).
"This innovative airborne travel link will be an essential element of the renaissance in a quarter, vibrant East of the capital, providing a much needed river crossing," Mayor Johnson said in a statement.
Transport for London (TfL) are in the hope that of construction on what will be the first of its kind urban transport system in the United Kingdom will be completed in time for the opening of the 2012 London Olympic Games 27 July.
Design by the architects based in the United Kingdom, Wilkinson Eyre includes 34 separate gondola cabins, each carrying 10 passengers to a height of 300 feet (90 meters) above the River Thames.
A trip to go should take five minutes.
TfL said a total of 2,500 passengers are transported each time and anticipate the two million people use the cable car each year.
The project will be led by the construction company Mace who have the experience to erect modern most iconic structures in London, including the London Eye, on the shore south of the Thames and most recently "The Sherd," which is currently under construction at London Bridge South of London.
