The prospects for the frequent flier miles and points in 2011? It depends on.
While the overall travel rebounding nicely the soaked with recession of the application of these last three years, it is not done uniformly.
Airlines, for example, are now filling out their aircraft to the capacity of 80 percent, even during off-peak periods.
More important still, they fly with profit. The largest air carriers posted U.S. profits combined 2.3 billion for 2010 and $ 4 billion when the one-time costs associated with mergers and the like are not counted, according to the Air Transport Associationan airline trade group. That compares to a loss of 26 billion in 2008 and 2009.
With a capacity aligned with demand and travelers willing to pay high price threshold of profitability, airline companies have little incentive to deploy them generous flier frequent promotions to stimulate business.
The picture is less rosy for the hotel industry, but more rewarding for the members of their programs for frequent stays.
2010 Hotel occupancy increased 5.7 percentage points, but even with this increase, occupation reached only 57.6%, STR, an industry research firm, reported. And daily rates average actually very slightly decreased to $MATTING.
