Libya warning

The United States, warns U.S. citizens against travel in Libya and recommends that American citizens in Libya to depart immediately. At the United States, informed the Government of Libya that it has suspended all Embassy operations effective February 25, 2011, in view of the ongoing violence and a deterioration of security. All the personal American embassy official and members of their families left.This warning replaces the warning dated February 24, 2011. The Department continues to reach out of United States citizens we believe remain in Libya. The Department works closely with other Governments and multinational corporations to ensure safe departure of these American citizens who still need help. Please address any questions regarding American citizens in Libya to LibyaEmergencyUSC@state.gov. Calls to the United States and the Canada can call the toll free number 1 888 407-4747. Appellants outside the Canada and the United States can call 1-202-501-4444. State Department urges these American citizens who choose to remain despite this warning in Libya part of their stay in Libya through the Smart traveller of registration program (STEP) at http://www.travel.state.gov/ and provide their contact information and close to the current information. The United States will be appointing a protecting power to help any remaining U.S. citizens in Libya and monitor its property.
