The Department of State authorized the return of all members of the family in Jeddah Consulate of Embassy Riyadh, United States and U.S. Consulate General Dhahran, but continues to warn citizens of the United States on the security situation in Saudi Arabia and reminds U.S. citizens of recommended safety measures. The Department of State urges us citizens to carefully consider the risk to go to Saudi Arabia. There is a threat to the current security because of the continued presence of terrorist groups, some affiliated with al-Qaeda, which can target Western interests, consisting of housing, hotels, shopping areas and other facilities where Westerners congregate. These terrorist groups can employ a variety of tactics and can also target the Saudi Government installations and the economic and commercial objectives within the Kingdom. It updates and replaces issued travel warning, February 18, 2010 noted the authorized return of dependents of U.S. Government in all posts in Saudi Arabia. The last major terrorist attack directed against foreign nationals was in 2007. Important steps since then by the Saudi Government have greatly improved security environment throughout the Kingdom. The State Department has authorized since the return of all members of the family in Jeddah Consulate of Embassy Riyadh, United States and Dhahran Consulate General of United States. Although these changes reflect a continuous improvement in the climate of security in Saudi Arabia, particularly in the Eastern Province and Riyadh it is important to note that there is still a threat to the current security. US citizens who visit Saudi Arabia are strongly encouraged to take precautions in the selection of hotels or housing compounds to ensure that the stringent security measures are provided. In addition, American citizens are still advised to be aware of their surroundings when travel or visit commercial establishments frequented by Westerners. Americans are also advised to make low profile, vary routes and times of travel, exercise caution while driving, entering or exiting vehicles and to ensure that the visa and travel documents are current and valid.
